This paper pretends to be a contribution to the history of translation in mainland China as well as in Macao, mostly regarding Jesuits role (Matteo Ricci, Michelle Ruggieri, Tomás Pereira, among others), and, later, in the XIXth century, Father Joaquim Afonso Gonçalves. They were decisive for the consolidation and prestige of translation in Macau and in mainland China, activity that is precursor of Portuguese teaching in both places, with its present vitality.
