Floods are one of the most significant natural hazards in the national territory. In fact, according to data from CRED (Centre for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters) at the Catholic University of Louvain, four of the most severe natural disasters in Portugal since 1900 were precisely floods: in November 1967 (462 deaths), December 1981 (30 deaths), January 1979 (19 deaths), and November 1983 (19 deaths).
