About the Journal

Media & Journalism is a pioneering scientific journal in Portugal in the field of media studies and journalism. The first issue was published in 2002 by the then CIMJ - Centro de Investigação Media & Jornalismo// Center for Research Media & Journalism, tackling a “diversity of the themes of its articles, methodologies and reflections” and being “a space that promotes qualified discussion, not only in the academic community, but also among all those interested in the media and journalism in contemporary societies.” The magazine is currently published by ICNOVA - NOVA Communication Institute, which has since merged with CIMJ. The journal is still published twice a year (April and October of each year), and is indexed in SCOPUS, Scielo and DOAJ databases, and it follows a rigorous scientific arbitration procedures. Moreover, all of its content is openly accessible and free of charge. 

Media & Journalism publishes top academic research and is a space for qualified discussions aimed at elucidating the social and political dynamics prompted by media and journalism in contemporary society. The reflections contribute to a more profound and critical knowledge of the various factors, time periods and impacts of the  complex phenomena of communication. It seeks to bring together a variety of issues and approaches, from history to sociology, from law to economics, from practices,  to technologies and uses, and constitutes an element of reflection and debate within a vast community looking at the peculiaries of the fields of media and journalism.

Focus and Scope

Media & Journalism accepts original articles based on empirical and qualitative methodologies. We especially seek research that contributes decisively and innovatively to developing new methods of analysis, applying theoretical models of empirical investigation, discussing and applying heuristic concepts, identifying and analyzing emerging phenomena in the media field, while critically reflecting on the communicational and technological dynamics of contemporary society and launching new interpretations of media history.

Articles, book reviews and interviews from the full range of communication sciences are accepted for submission with particular emphasis on media studies and journalism.  Issues of particular interest to Media & Journalism include: journalism, society and democracy; media and social identities; media history and transformation; communication and journalism ethics; media economics and politics; modes and strategies of political and strategic communication; information technologies and innovation in the media and journalism; new media forms of communication; journalists as an interpretive community; digital and transmedia literacy; and media pluralism and digital practice.

The accepted articles constitute the central section of the magazine, with a topic that serves as the title to each issue. Co-editors can be chosen by invitation or via a periodic call system.

Publication Frequency 

The journal publishes two issues per year and provides texts in Portuguese, Spanish and English following the continuous publication model (online-first).

Media&Jornalismo is published biannually.

Journal Structure

Media & Journalism journal is organised into three sections:

  • Articles (Open submissions, indexed, peer review)

1This short section may include articles that vary from the central themes and is edited by the ongoing journal editors.

Peer Review Process

  • All articles submitted to Media & Journalismo are subject to double blind peer review. If necessary, a third reviewer will be consulted.
  • Before the start of the blind peer review process, the editorial team of Media & Journalismo evaluates the suitability of each article based on the journal’s focus, scope and section policies. All articles that do not meet the journal’s submission criteria are returned to the authors within a maximum period of four weeks upon their receipt.
  • After the initial analysis of the articles by the editorial team of Media & Journalismo, each article that meets the journal's submission criteria is sent to two evaluators, who are chosen according to their experience in the area to which the articles relate. The review process always remains anonymous and can take up to six months to complete.
  • The chosen evaluators are asked to review the articles based on their relevance and originality in the field of journalism studies; to identify the strengths and weaknesses of each article, taking into account aspects such as the theoretical and methodological approaches followed; and to evaluate the validity of the results, the analyses and conclusions.
  • After receiving the evaluators’ comments, the editorial team of Media & Journalismo reports the results of the evaluations to the authors of the articles, indicating the final decision taken based on four categories: Publishable as is, Publishable with minor modifications, Publishable with major modifications, and Not Publishable.
  • If the article falls into the Publishable category with minor and major modifications, the author is invited to send, within a period of up to three months, a revised version that must address the evaluators’ comments. This revised version is returned to the initial reviewers for a reassessment of the article, which may take up to two months.

Open Acess Policy 

This journal offers immediate free access to its contents. We strongly believe that free and public access to scientific knowledge is fundamental for democratizing that knowledge.

Anti-plagiarism Policy

The manuscripts submitted to this journal will undergo investigation procedures for possible plagiarisms, before sending them to the blind evaluation. Media & Jornalismo Journal repudiates any form of plagiarism and acknowledge that it is the responsibility of the author to guarantee the originality of his work, including the proper citation of sources. In the event of plagiarism verification, the paper will be immediately rejected.

Archiving 

This journal utilizes the LOCKSS system to create a distributed archiving system among participating libraries and allows them to create permanent archives of the journal for its preservation and restoration. Know more

Media & Journalism journal doesn't charge any fee from authors to articles submission, peer review, revision, journal publishing, and distribution, publication and download in the World Wide Web.
