The Dominance of the Television Information Arena
the case of the first term of the President of the Portuguese Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa

In this research we sought to find out to what extent, in the first mandate, the President of the Republic (PR), Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, became one of the protagonists of the news on the free to air channels and what are the reasons that explain this fact. Thus, we proceeded to a quantitative analysis of the presence of the PR in the news shows of RTP1, RTP2, SIC and TVI, over the 5 years, in terms of number and time of the news. Subsequently, we conducted interviews with all the journalists who, in that period, were Head of News of the television channels. We concluded that the PR was the main political actor in television news in the first three years of his mandate and the second in the final two years, only behind the Prime Minister. We present a model based on three vectors - personal, political and media - that explains the dominance of the PR on television news arena by the way he positioned himself in these three axes.
