Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is a complex practice, that shakes all the foundations on which human rights are based on: on one hand, it is seen as a violation of the rights of women and children and an attack on the right to health; on the other hand, it is an intrinsic part of cultural rights, religious freedom and self-determination. The media have been defining FGM as a social problem that constitutes an abuse of human rights. In this approach, not only should journalists exercise their role in informing the public and fostering knowledge about this practice, but they should also ensure their responsibility in educating and raising awareness. In this sense, this research aims to answer the question: what is the representation of FGM in Portuguese news media?
