Podcast Consumption by Young Adults as an Alternative Way of Accessing Information: An Exploratory Study with Media Students

Young adults between 17 and 22 years old are the ones who most listen podcast contents, breaking away from information consumption via traditional media. However, there are no studies on specific populations that show us consumption trends, podcast preferences and types, consumption platforms and the importance of audio and video production elements.
This exploratory quantitative analysis was carried out using a questionnaire survey of 112 undergraduate media students, and it was concluded that these young people mainly consume lifestyle podcasts, with a strong prevalence of cultural and comedy/humor podcasts, but also news and information podcasts, which is expected because it’s their area of study. Among these young people there is also a strong appreciation of audiovisual content, particularly the sound and visual identity of the podcast.
