Resumo

We discuss the importance of causality in economics, particularly in the area of labor economics. Causation is at the root of the analysis applied to facts, that is, as a means of explaining events. It is therefore intimately linked to decision-making or the making of decisions. As a true thought experiment, causation is illustrated in the context of natural experiments, that is, through proper construction of counterfactuals applied to minimum wage issues, trade union wage premium, management practices and firm performance, and, more broadly, to the role of institutions in economic growth.
