Abstract

In Theaetetus 203a-205e, Socrates argues by the means of peculiar mathematical notions which in this paper we seek to enlighten. From this analysis, it appears that according to Plato, Socrates and the young mathematician have the same representation of the integer as a dynamic multiplicity corresponding to a diagram which shows the principle of cohesion that makes precisely the number : “integer”. On this basis, the Socratic dialogue would have succeed in delivering Theaetetus of the demonstrative logos which is not a shadow of discourse but a real way of reasoning good for the mathematicians.
