This paper presents the Young & Rygh Avoidance Inventory (YRAI) validation and factor structure studies on a clinical sample of 126 Portuguese subjects.
The YRAI is a self-report inventory made of 40 items, selected in order to assess different types of schema avoidance processes. The authors suggest the existence of 14 different avoidance strategies that can be cognitive, emotional or behavioral. The items were chosen among the most frequent avoidance strategies being used by patients doing Schema Focused Therapy, namely people suffering from personality disorders.
The YRAI showed to possess good psychometric properties and it was possible to extract 12 avoidance factors, being the majority of these consistent with the ones theoretically proposed. A second order factor analysis revealed two major avoidance dimensions: Behavioral/Somatic and Cognitive/Emotional, accordingly to the conceptual model developed by Young (1990, 1999).
