The social ascension in the historical novel of Alexandre dumas and Camilo Castelo Branco

This article proposes an analysis of Alexandre Dumas’ best-seller The Three Musketeers (1844), focusing on the theme of social ascension represented by the protagonist d’Artagnan and the villain Milady. Then, it is sought to understand how the myth of meritocracy is questioned by the Portuguese writer Camilo Castelo Branco, in O Demônio do Ouro (1873), a historical novel that has a protagonist in search of social ascension, as in Dumas, and a similar villain, in many ways, to Milady. The objective of this study is to reflect on how the theme of social ascension is seen differently in France, one of the centers of capitalism, and in Portugal, a semi-periphery.
