Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

Author Guidelines

1. Submission of articles and critical reviewes

The articles and reviews submitted for publication must be original works and follow the editorial standards adopted by the journal. Texts will undergo a rigorous peer-review, including an initial editor screening and a blind review by at least two referees. The whole process is carried out in accordance with the Code of Ethics. All proposals must be submitted through the Open Journal Systems platform (http://impactum-journals.uc.pt/rhi/submission/wizard) and include the following data:

- author’s name;

- academic affiliation;

- author’s ORCID

 - email address.

2. Publication of articles

2.1. Text format and length

Articles can be written in Portuguese, English, French, Spanish and Italian. Texts must not exceed a maximum of 50 000 characters with spaces, including abstract, footnotes, bibliography, etc.

The beginning of the article must include:

i) a title, both in English and in the language of the article (14-point Arial Bold, centered or justified);

ii) the author’s name, email address, ORCID and institutional affiliation (if the author is affiliated with several institutions, two of them can be mentioned) in successive paragraphs;

iii) an abstract with a maximum of 150 words (10-point Arial) both in English and in the language in the article. If the article is in English, the abstract shall also be written in any of the other languages accepted by the journal;

iv) a list of five keywords in English and in the language of the abstract.

The end of article must include a bibliography limited to the quoted works;

Footnotes must be brief and shall be used just for explanations or occasional comments. The core subject must be included in the body of the text. Footnote callouts must be inserted before punctuation marks.

2.2. Text Formatting

The text must be formatted using Microsoft Word, in the A4 size and according to the following page settings: 22 mm top and bottom margins, 24 mm left and right margins, 10-point Arial, justified, 16.36 line-spacing, 5 mm first line indentation. Pages and notes shall be numbered sequentially.

Subtitles shall have no numbers and must be left-aligned and formatted in Arial Bold, size 9.5.

Apart from titles, no other text should be underlined or in bold.

Quotes must be presented between Latin quotation marks (<<    >>), except if they exceed three lines. In this case, they should be separated from the text by one space and written in a 9-point font, followed by an abbreviated reference to the quoted work.

Footnotes must be formatted in 8-point Arial, justified with 10-point line spacing, and shall be numbered sequentially.

All hyperlinks must be removed.

Graphics, tables, maps and illustrations must be created in Adobe Illustrator and saved in its native format (.ai extension <http://xn--extenso-2wa.ai>). Graphics can also be created in Microsoft Excel, as long as they are saved as pictures in the TIFF format. Photographs must be saved in the CMYK mode and TIFF format, and have a 300 dpi resolution and a size of 16x23cm.

Each item shall be sent in a separate file and the text must mention where it should be inserted.

It is the author’s responsibility to obtain permission to publish images subject to copyright laws.

2.3. Organization of the final bibliography

In the final bibliography, whenever the same author is mentioned more than once, their name should be replaced with << – >>

The items must be alphabetically sorted by the author’s surname, without caps or small caps, observing the name by which the author is known. Roman numerals should be avoided.

Whenever possible, webpages and sites should include the author’s bibliographical information, title and date. It is essential to indicate the URL and the date of last access.

2.4. Abbreviated quotes

References to a passage or a work must be made in abbreviated form, preferably within the text, following the author and date model (name of the author date: page). For example: (Anunciação 2003: 25).

The following abbreviations shall be used: id, et al., eds, eds., coord., trad., org., intr., pref., posf., ib., cit., ad loc, cf., v., in (for collective works only), apud, wd., wp., wn.

3. Publication of critical reviews

The reviewed work must be identified according to the model used in the bibliography.

Critical reviews must not exceed 8000 characters with spaces.
