The present article proposes to reflect, based on a case study, a periodical from 1822 aimed at the female audience – Gazeta das Damas by Caetano António de Lemos – on a topic that has only superficially interested the historiography of the early stages of the Portuguese liberalism, that is, to what extent the rupture that took place in the 20th century (1820-1823) gave women greater public visibility, adding them, albeit discreet, to citizenship and leading society to question their place in it.
