Abstract

This text proposes an unprecedented perspective on the exile of Jaime Cortesão, verifying how his intellectual prestige, combined with the humanist appetite and the intervention in groups, allowed him to access to social networks that, in turn, supported him and allowed to deepen his multifaceted work. These networks, started in their native country, soon assumed a strong Portuguese-Brazilian and cosmopolitan dimension, as well as a demo-republican dimension, which would facilitate his integration in the host countries, France, Spain and Brazil. In order to give an account of this singular course that mixes political and intellectual exiles, the article combines a cross-analysis of his facet of scholar, essayist and political and civic activist with the undervalued facet of promoter of publishing, book and reading. This study articulates research on the circulation of print in the twentieth century, the place of exile ideas and networks and the example of Jaime Cortesão.
