Abstract

Students´ adjustment to the higher education can be understood as a multidimensional process that requires from the student adjustable development competences to this new context and to their identity transformations. These adjustable competences can be developed, or not, by the academic experience of a student on college, but the literature assumes that these competences can interfere on students´ academic achievement. This study analyses the first year students´ academic experiences considering five dimensions: interpersonal, personal, vocational, study, and institutional. The present paper shows that the academic performance of first year students is more related to the classifications on secondary school than to their academic adjustment experiences in higher education.
