Abstract

  This article aims to reflect on the social place of universities, as well as the role of intellectuals, based on the review of bibliography on the subject. In this sense, it was methodologically sought to investigate different perspectives on the university duty, in order to understand important aspects of the purpose of this study. Initially, the path of medieval universities was used to find out what the concept of university professor was at that time. Then, the text will focus on the role of intellectuals today, always pressed between the tasks of teaching and research.
