Abstract

The aim of the present study was to characterise the performance of students attending Higher Education Polytechnic Institutes, as compared to the grades (grade levels) they obtained at the term of their Secondary School studies (Secondary School Grades -SSG) and the entrance/enrolment mark (EM) to Polytechnics. We used a design of the type ex-post-fact applied to a sample of 1596 students. The results observed enable us to conclude that the performance of students within Polytechnics, their yearly means (MC) and Percentage of Subjects Successfully Accomplished (PDA) are shown to be highly contrasted, with p=<.001 when compared to groups which were made up, based on percentis 25,50,75,90 and 95 as far as Secondary School Grades (CES) and Entrance Mark (NC) are concerned. The discriminant analysis applied to the two groups formed, whose percentil was 50, as based on their Entrance Mark (NC), shows a considerable capacity to classify subjects correctly (70%) bearing on their performance as Higher Education students (Yearly/Course Mean (MC), together with the subjects’ Percentage of Subjects Successfully Accomplished (PDA).
