Abstract

Health Promoting Universities and Colleges (HPUC) represent another WHO healthy setting project, inspired by the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion and by the success of similar initiatives. In the last two decades, the number of worldwide higher education institutions who accepted HPUC challenge has increased. Portuguese counterparts have not been unresponsive to this global increasing movement, presenting important health promotion initiatives that, however, do not constitute the operationalisation of a HPUC project.
This article aims to contribute to the debate on HPUC movement in Portugal and not only presents arguments for health promotion in the national higher education setting and examples of health promotion initiatives carried out by Portuguese higher education institutions, but also challenges these institutions to take some measures that would accelerate the transformation advocated by the HPUC movement.
