Recent results about the Roman road network in Lusitania countryside prompt a new analysis of the Merida-Braga itinerary, in particular in its relation with Serra da Estrela. The construction of the bridge of Alcantara contributed to a change in a network in which the main access to de Serra was made through the road Emerita-Asturica, with the bridge playing a pivotal role in the promotion of the regional civitates and the development of a dense network centered in the axis Merida-Alcantara-Braga.
