A Latin maxim dating back to Claudianus echoes in a Luís de Camões’ poem. This ancient makarismós has undergone a substantial transformation during transmission. Due to religious censorship, the three original lines were replaced by a shorter version. As a result of the philological renewal of Humanistic period we are allowed to retrieve the original integrity. Such renowned personalities as St. Augustin and Petrarch have been involved in the process.
