Anyone familiar with the works of Luciano Pereira da Silva knows that Camões not only had a clear and confident knowledge of the astronomy of his time and rigorously used tables of astronomical ephemerides, but also made a point of showing his scientific erudition in his work. After knowing this facet of Camões and reading the third verse of his sonnet ‘O dia em que eu nasci, morra e pereça’, we may deduce that Camões refers to a solar eclipse that actually occurred, allowing us to infer that the poet was born on January 23, 1524, as Mario Saa proposed in 1940.
