The epigram In Paniza, attributed to Juan Ginés de Sepúlveda, was written in order to thank Juan Domínguez de Paniza for a gift made to the Library of the Royal Spanish College at Bologna. The gift was a copy of Nebrija’s Gramática castellana, which is still preserved in the aforementioned Library, as the first codicological unit of Cod. 132. Understanding the epigram In Paniza is not an easy task, given the obscure words there employed, along with its over-elaborate form. Thus, we have tried to elucidate this short poem by means of certain lexical, syntactic and stylistic considerations.
