Abstract

The study presents the Jesuit biographer António Franco (1662-1732), author of the Imagem da Virtude. Although confess their pedagogical and apologetic purposes, father António Franco reveals historical and critical requirements at the time hagiography (literary genre in which we include their edifying lives) begins to assert itself as a critical science. The study also proposes a reading of Imagem da Virtude in the context of spiritual pedagogy that values the Company not only an edifying view of history and historiography, as the spiritual principle of imitatio sanctorum.
