Abstract

José Oliveira is a book artist who takes inspiration from the history and evolution of the Western book and of Western writing. His artist’s books take the form of codices, scrolls and leporellos and embody the beliefs, grief and hopes of their author. They ask us about our conceptions of the book and the nature of reading. They are evidences of their author’s resolute rejection of contemporary techniques applied to books.

Author Biography

Catarina Figueiredo Cardoso, CLP, University of Coimbra (Doctoral Program in Materialities of Literature)

Catarina Figueiredo Cardoso holds a Law degree and an MA in Political Science. She collects illustrated books, books with drawings, scrawls, photographs, fingerprints. She keeps up with the scene of Portuguese artists’ books, zines, self-published books and by small publishers, art forms that evolve and change with the technologies directly and indirectly linked to the book. Collecting books and meeting the artists who create them led her to a reflection on this recent art form and its critical reception in Portugal. She gathers documentation and bibliography to enable her to analyze its development in Portugal and its integration in the international movements around the word and the book, which grew out of the 1960s. With Isabel Baraona, she edited number 32 of the Journal of Artists’ Books (Fall 2012), about artists’ books in Portugal. Her latest project is Tipo.pt, a database on artists' books and self-published small press works coedited by Isabel Baraona. She lives and works in Lisbon.
