Drawing from the characterization of the hero as a literary category, this study develops a reflection on the sports hero, using the literary tools of narratology as a basis for this analysis. The sports hero is valued by public projection in media discourse in the context of mass communication; in this medium, certain narrative genres (such as the biography) configure the hero shaped through images, especially on television. Furthermore, often the sports hero becomes endowed with collective desires and values of the community he or she represents; when the hero is defeated, it is also a defeat for this community.
