Abstract

Driven by market and its financial dimension but also by a digital paradigm, the entire journalism structure stands at a crossroad. Only a strategic alliance between journalism and the academy (journalism/communication courses) can face the threats that endanger journalism values. As journalism /communication courses are increasingly becoming the main gateway to the profession, academy must ensure a central role in the process, training professionals committed to inform the public. The formula is complex: it requires professionals who are strong enough to resist the market constraints that weaken journalism, and, at the same time, are capable of giving critical responses to market demands by innovating and producing alternatives. This goal requires a closer tie between academy and profession, a constructive approach which will not annihilate the identity of either.
