The article starts from the hypothesis that the economic, social and political environment in Brazil contributes to put the independence of journalists in check. It proposes an approach focused on neoliberal labor relations, related to the concepts of objectivity and independence, and on individual responsibility in the production and dissemination of information considering the impacts of technology on the reconfiguration of journalistic practice. The discussion is an open reflection on the gaps in the deontological bases for professional practice, considering the imperfections of society and, therefore, of journalism itself — new dialogues for professional performance, in an invitation to think together between academia, the market and professionals, in strengthening political and symbiotic action in relation to information in and for democracy.
