This paper offers an overview of literary theory as a discipline in Brazil following three interconnected threads: the constitution of theoretical discourse as increasingly delinked from literature, the institutionalization process according to national specificities and the social impact of theory-derived ideas. The text closes with a wager concerning the incorporation of literary theory in Brazilian culture.
