The institutionalization of the discipline Theory of Literature in Brazil took place in a context defined by the attempt to establish the field of Humanities within the academic world, made possible after the creation of the University of São Paulo, in 1934. The task was challenging, especially due to the strong tradition of critical and social essayism active in Brazil since the 19th century. The strategy employed in this dispute implied both the valorization of the specialization of academic fields and the privilege of a given materiality, namely, the book form as opposed to the newspaper.
