Positivism and philology have shaped the history of Portuguese literature until the second half of the 20th century. From the 1960's onwards, Theory of Literature triumphed over literary studies and literary history started losing ground in favour of the immanent analysis of texts and literature's aesthetic dimension. As an outcome of this mismatch, the history of Portuguese literature remains an "unfinished project" (J. A. Bernardes).
