This paper follows some of the major consequences of the main curricular reforms in the teaching of Portuguese literature in the first half of the twentieth century. The construction of concepts such as “nation” and “colonial empire”, through the teaching of literature, is at the centre of my analysis. Current alternatives are proposed, and the production of a teachable canon and its contours are discussed in its main implications.
