João-Maria Vilanova is a pseudonym for an Angolan writer who was born in Portugal but wanted to remain anonymous until his suicide so that the reception of his texts would not be infl uenced by his biography. João-Maria Vilanova wrote poems about the struggle for national liberation, some of them in Kimbundu, and short stories about colonial violence and suffering. He abandoned Angola before the independence of 1975 and committed suicide in 2005, in Vila Nova de Gaia.
