Batalha and Mafra: History inside out

Literature and history have always been linked through an obvious fascination. Two examples from different time periods in Portuguese literature – Alexandre Herculano and José Saramago – illustrate how literature can benefi t from the emptiness of truth and, in unexpected ways, speculate about time and, by extension, about human history.
