Luís de Camões, José Saramago, Portuguese identity, desacralizationAbstract
In The Year of the Death of Ricardo Reis, José Saramago proposes to revisit Camões and his work as the underlying support upon which Portuguese historical and literary identity was formed and consolidated. Such revisiting entails desacralization. Camões’s monumentality, as an emblematic author of Portuguese Literature, is not denied in the novel, but critically (re)considered.
