Abstract

Almost always related to the poem’s cold and stereotyped dimension, the Dedication of The Lusiads is actually of central importance, conditioning the interpretation of the entire work. It appears to be rather unusual, at first glance, because of its abnormal extension (13 stanzas). By highlighting the figure of the providential monarch, the poet also creates a presence that extends through to the very last verse. In this sense, it is useful to reread the general lines of the episodes in light of the special relationship that Camões wished to maintain with King Sebastian, in his dual capacity as recipient and hero of a future that was looming before him. In this study, we explore the different interpretations of the episode of Inês de Castro, as told to King Sebastian.
