This paper will focus on two different ways of understanding the scope and consequences of the concept of “Semiotics” in the study of literature. The first, endorsed by Mukarovsky, proposes a view of each literary artefact as a “work-thing” that demands two separate levels of semiotic approach. The second, proposed by Aguiar e Silva, seems to embed the concept within a horizontal system of relations to other equally fruitful hermeneutical devices. It will be suggested that the second alternative is more productive than its predecessor.
