In this paper I argue that the emergent African literatures in Portuguese are modern even when they use postmodern strategies or refer to premodern customs. They grow out of well-defined cultural backgrounds and underline their sense of locality in realistic terms in order to assert a decolonized national identity. Only in rare cases – and only after the independence –, have these literatures been inscribed in a cosmopolitanism which minimizes their local and national rootedness. However, it is unlikely that we find them adhering to a world-literature view in its transnational and postmodern, i.e., globalized strategy.
