Hélia Correia’s novel A Casa Eterna [the eternal house] is approached here as an inquiry into the meaning of being a poet and living in poetry. Going beyond a mere sequence of testimonies on the protagonist’s life path, the narrator seeks to grasp the hidden, all-powerful motive behind poetic creation. The novel is rich in meta-literary and metalinguistic refl ections, and bears intertextual relationships to great works from Classical Antiquity, Portuguese literature, German literature, as well as to a later novella by the author herself.
