In the present study we analyze the literary strategy of Alexandre Herculano (1810-1877) in linking his historical fictions to preexisting manuscripts. To that purpose, we studied the historical novels Eurico, o presbítero (1844) and O Monge de Cister (1848), which compose the collection Monasticon (1848), and other narratives collected by the author in Lendas e Narrativas (1851), establishing a dialogue with the works of Ana Marques (2012), Eduardo Lourenço (1992), Isabel Román (1988), Maria de Fátima Marinho (1984, 1999, 2013) and Paulo Motta Oliveira (2000). We approach the fictionalization of supposed pre-existing manuscripts, as a compositional resource, as well as the possible foundation and fictionalization of Middle Ages Livros de Linhagens and documentary chronicles in the literary productions of Herculano.
