Author Biography

Manuel Portela, Center for Portuguese Literature, University of Coimbra

Manuel Portela teaches in the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures at the Faculty of Arts, University of Coimbra, and he is the current Coordinator of the PhD Program Advanced Studies in the Materialities of Literature. He is a member of the Centre for Portuguese Literature at the University of Coimbra, and was Director of the University Theatre between 2005 and 2008. His many translations include the first Portuguese translations of Songs of Innocence and of Experience (1994; revised, 2007) and Milton (2009), by William Blake,  and The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman (2 vols, 1997-98), by Laurence Sterne, for which he received the National Award for Translation. In 2003, he published O Comércio da Literatura: Mercado e Representação [The Commerce of Literature: Marketplace and Representation], an extensive study of the English literary market in the 18th century.  His latest research has been concerned with the digital literature and digital culture. He has taught several courses and seminars on digital media.
