During the military dictatorship (1926-1933) and the early days of the Estado Novo (1933), Vitorino Nemésio, clearly an oppositionist, did not have any significant activism. Gradually, probably for reasons of survival, he stopped committing himself to political changes. The regime appointed him to a position of political trust at the University of Lisbon and his name was even suggested to join the Câmara Corporativa. Having welcomed the fall of the Estado Novo (1974), Vitorino Nemésio was unhappy with the path the country followed, especially after March 1975, and advocated the adoption of a model similar to tose of the Western Europe democracies.
