Abstract

In this study we analyze the relationship between comprehension processes and active learning. For active learning we meant a situation where the learners engage in cognitive processing during learning, such as attending to information, organizing knowledge into a coherent representation, and integrating representations with prior knowledge and with each other. The comprehension of texts is one of the most important aspects of an effective learning. Since text comprehension involves different levels of processing, we analyze how crucial a deep understanding is to learning from text. In order to promote an active learning, instruction must help students to develop comprehension strategies that will allow them not only to remember the text information, but also to use this information in new situations.
