This article discusses the school and literacy in Brazil . It shows the challenge of introducing children to the world of reading and the research results that point the inefficient teaching system of this country. In order to change this reality, teachers, parents, school and public authorities need to assume a different posture toward education: teaching for freedom. The school needs to play a new role in the process of transforming the structures of society.Downloads
