This study analyses the relationship between personal values and the motivational behaviour of teachers among two specific tasks of teaching activity. Also, based on the Self-Determination Theory (SDT) and the Theory of Basic Human Values of Schwartz, it examines the effects of these variables in well-being levels. The sample consisted of 345 teachers (80.3% female) from basic and secondary education of Portugal. Participants mean age was 49.41 years old (SD = 7.71), and the mean value for professional experience as teacher was 25.07 years (SD = 7.37). The results seem to support the SDT assumptions, namely that intrinsic values facilitate a more self-determined motivational behaviour while extrinsic values promote the less self-determined types of motivation. In addition, the results suggest that personal values and motivational functioning produce independent effects on teachers’ psychological well-being.
