Abstract

This paper aims to discuss gender identity and gender roles issues encountered in the movie Stage Beauty (2004) from a queer theoretical framework. This discussion is carried out by focusing on the experiences of the two main characters in the movie: Ned Kynaston, an actor who is specialized in playing women parts, and Maria, his dresser, who intends to become an actress. We consider the relationship between these two characters with the changes in the law related to women roles in the British theater in the xvii century to discuss gender identity and gender roles issues. In order to do that, we present some concepts based on a queer perspective in the first part of the article and then use them to analyze some specific scenes taken from the movie and to present a wider problematic
found in Stage Beauty.
