The subject of self-criticism has received in recent years an increasing interest in the field of psychology. The research presented here aims to contribute to the knowledge of self-criticism and its relationship with psychopathology, as well as with several constructs that literature has shown to be associated to its origin, development and maintenance, such as experiences of threat and submissiveness in childhood, shame and submission. The results of the studies, conducted on a sample of university students (N = 263), showed a significant association between submissive behavior in adulthood and recall of parental experiences of submissiveness in childhood, the experience of internal shame and self-criticism. About depressive symptomatology, the results of our study also suggested the existence of significant associations with internal shame and self-criticism. Whether internal shame or self-criticism are significant predictors of submission and depressive symptoms.Downloads
