Abstract

Self-criticism is related to psychopathology, either as a personality factor associated with a specific vulnerability to depression (Blatt, 2004; Gilbert, 1998, 2002a), or as a process directly associated with depression and other forms of psychopathology (Gilbert et al., 2001; Birchwood et al., 2001), and also as a predictor of poor interpersonal adjustment and psychological problems. This study aims to present the psychometric properties and factor structure of the Portuguese version of Forms of Self-Criticizing/Attacking and Self-reassuring Scale and Functions of Self-Criticizing/Attacking Scale. The results show that the scales have good internal consistency and temporal stability. The factor analysis proved to be similar to the original (Gilbert et al., 2004), demonstrating the existence of two sub-scales (Self-correction and Self-attack) to the FSCS and three sub-scales (Inadequate self, Hated self and Selfreassurance) to FSCRS. These instruments of self-response are useful and reliable for clinical evaluation and investigation of self-criticism.
