Rumination has been widely studied in the field of cognitive vulnerabilities to depression. According to the Response Styles Theory (Nolen-Hoeksema, 1987) rumination plays a crucial role in the development and maintenance of depressive mood. This study examined the psychometric properties of the Portuguese version of the Ruminative Responses Scale (short form) (Nolen-Hoeksema & Morrow, 1991), which recently underwent changes - items that had a confounding content with measures of depressive symptoms were eliminated (Treynor, Gonzalez, & Nolen- Hoeksema, 2003). Analyses conducted on a sample of the general population, reveal that the Portuguese version of the instrument has good psychometric properties. The results of factor analysis confirm the existence of a two-dimensional structure, consisting of the brooding and reflective pondering, which have differential relations with measures of psychopathology. The results provide further empirical support for the need to differentiate between these two components in future research on rumination.Downloads
