The novel Vingança, by Camilo Castelo Branco, published in 1858, is a good example of how the novelistic form develops in peripheral countries. The introduction of the nosy narrator who often intrudes on the narrative and the revenge theme, related to the flow and distribution of capital, seem to force the construction of a non-linear narrative. In this case, these elements are of great importance for our analysis, because it seeks to understand the relationship between the Portuguese liberal economy and how the novel shaped itself within that environment. Through this, our aim is for a reading of the novelistic form and its adaptation to the peripheral Portuguese environment.
