Abstract

This essay focuses on an anonymous manuscript entitled O Amante Despedido. It is, in fact, a Portuguese translation of the short farce Turrada, written by Luis Quiñones de Benavente, one of the most prolific playwrights of the Siglos de Oro. The study of the Portuguese manuscript and the collation with Quiñones’s text will allow to: 1) deepen the knowledge about the theatre and its textual transmission circuits; 2) complete the work on the reception of Spanish playwrights in Portugal in the 17th and 18th centuries, paying attention to an author who, despite the merits recognized by the Spanish academy, has only recently received the attention of Portuguese critics; 3) to proceed with the identification of theatre translation strategies, in order to contribute to a broader understanding of the translatory phenomenon, considering its genre specificity and the historical context in which it is inserted.
