This article contains a critical revisit of the current “Portuguese Syllabus for Basic Education”, approved in 2009 and coordinated by Carlos Reis. Examining the challenges faced by Portuguese language students and teachers in a changing society where knowledge becomes rapidly outdated, our proposal argues in favour of upholding both Portuguese literature and Portuguese-language literatures in the curriculum lists. Bringing to light the character of literary reading, this article highlights the role of literature in the education of children and adolescents.
